Revolutionary War History

The Fieldcrest Clubhouse sits atop a mountain overlooking the Smith River on land settled in 1760, known as Waller’s Ford. George Waller and his wife, Anne Winston Carr (cousin of Patrick Henry), built a farm that covered all of the area now known as Fieldale. He formed a settlement and created a drill ground to train militia for the Revolutionary War.

On March 17, 1781, Waller marched three companies of troops 70 miles to the Battle of Guilford County Courthouse where they secured a victory and Waller was promoted to Colonel. Colonel Waller and his troops then marched to Yorktown to join George Washington. On October 19, 1781, these brave men forced the surrender of Lord Cornwallis who released the British claim to American soil, granting independence and freedom to the American people.

Colonel Waller and his descendants continued to live at Waller’s Ford until 1916 when the land was sold to Marshall Field and Company.
